I recently sat down with the host of the Method Ministries podcast, Pastor Lucas Curcio of The Mission Church in Paramus, New Jersey, for what became one of the most convicting conversations I've had in months.
Lucas has a unique perspective on modern Christian masculinity, having navigated both the challenges of contemporary manhood and the calling to pastoral ministry.
From Wandering to Purpose
Lucas shared his journey of becoming a Christian at 18 after years of aimlessness. Like many men, he spent his early twenties without direction until the gospel grabbed hold of his life through reading Scripture and seeing transformation in his brother. His story reminded me that God often uses our wandering years to prepare us for greater purpose.
The Responsibility Revolution
Our conversation took a powerful turn when discussing the victim mentality plaguing many young men today. Lucas emphasized that true masculinity begins with taking responsibility for your life, regardless of circumstances. We explored how men must reconcile with their earthly fathers to properly understand their relationship with their heavenly Father—a truth that cuts through much of today's blame-shifting culture.
Revival vs. Trends
Perhaps most challenging was Lucas's critique of the various movements trying to capture Christian men's hearts. Whether it's the Manosphere, Christian nationalism, or recent conversions to Eastern Orthodoxy, he argues these trends often bypass the simple gospel call to die to self and live for Christ.
The Quiet Life
We concluded by discussing the biblical concept of living "a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness." In our hypermediated age, this seems almost revolutionary. Lucas reminded me that the men with the greatest eternal impact are often those whose names we'll never know—faithful fathers, humble pastors, and quiet believers who simply love Jesus and serve their local communities.
This conversation challenged me to examine my own motivations and reminded me why the simple gospel remains our greatest treasure.
